Local newspaper Maeil Business reported Wednesday Yoon said Moon expects communications with North Korea will resume after Friday, the last day of joint U.S.

"We will know next week about Singapore", he told reporters at the White House before departing for NY.

Pompeo's testimony Wednesday to the House Foreign Affairs Committee marked a significant walking back from rhetoric that North Korea has scorned, raising doubts about the meeting between Kim and President Donald Trump have planned for Singapore on June 12.

Mr Trump later denied the U.S. would follow the "Libyan model" if an agreement was reached with North Korea.

If it goes ahead, it will be first meeting between a USA and a North Korean leader during more than six decades of hostility, and it would come just months after the North's rapid progress toward attaining a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike America fueled fears of war.

The United States and South Korea are working to keep the scheduled US summit with North Korea on track - even after President Donald Trump's comment that "there's a very substantial chance" it won't go off as planned.

North Korea cancelled high-level talks with South Korea, saying the South's joint military exercises with the U.S. - which it had previously said it would tolerate - were a "provocation".

That was a reference to Libya's former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, who agreed to give up nuclear weapons in 2003 and was later killed by Western-backed rebels. "I don't think I want to totally commit myself". He said Bolton's comments were alluding to the failure of past disarmament deals with North Korea "where in exchange for act x the United States sends a check across the transom", Pompeo said. On Wednesday it was escorting a group of worldwide reporters, including an Associated Press Television crew, to witness the closure of its atomic test site.

Earlier Wednesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told lawmakers the talks were "still scheduled for June 12".

Pompeo said that "if we can get America's interests safe and secure we are prepared to do a great deal", including security assurances for Kim.

Many observers had argued before Mr Trump met Mr Moon that there was too much at stake for Washington and Pyongyang not to proceed with the Singapore summit.

However, based on his own discussions with the North Korean leader, Pompeo said he was hopeful that Trump could convince Kim to make a strategic decision to denuclearise.

Visiting Washington, Chinese State Councillor Wang Yi told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that if the United States seeks peace with North Korea and wants to make history, "now is the time" for the two countries' leaders to hold their first-ever summit.

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit.

It was unclear whether Trump was truly backing away from the summit or whether he was strategically coaxing North Korea to the table after decades of tension on the Korean peninsula and antagonism with Washington over its nuclear weapons program.
