Mr Trump appeared to be reacting to recent news reports there may have been a top-secret source inside the Trump campaign providing intelligence to the FBI as it began its investigation into Russia's interference in the election process.

"Andrew McCarthy says, 'There's probably no doubt that they had at least one confidential informant in the campaign.' If so, this is bigger than Watergate!"

Trump's early morning tweet seemed meant to undercut the ongoing Russian Federation investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller, which he has repeatedly called a "witch hunt".

According to the report, agencies led by Obama monitored Trump's presidential campaign.

But, as The Post reported earlier this month, senior Federal Bureau of Investigation and national intelligence officials notified Nunes that doing so could endanger a top-secret intelligence source and risk lives.

"There is no question that the Obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 elections", former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

Giuliani's team has been weighing whether to allow Trump to sit for an interview with Mueller.

"I'm shocked to hear that they put a spy in the campaign of a major party candidate, or maybe two spies", he said.

"I think what people need to look here at is they didn't have a criminal predicate to investigate people in the Trump campaign they did, and they used their counterintelligence powers as a pretext to investigate the Trump campaign in the hope of making a criminal case". As Giuliani blasted Comey as a "damn liar" and a leaker, which devolved into a argument about the legality of the former FBI director's actions, and whether his firing was the catalyst for Robert Mueller's investigation.

Giuliani, who is working for the president pro bono, said Wednesday that the probe "is not good for the American people, and the special counsel's office doesn't seem to have that sort of understanding that they're interfering with things that are much bigger than them".
