SpaceX Falcon-9 rockets land after launching Bangabandhu-1 satellite into orbit

Grady Vargas | 13 May, 2018, 00:27

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted the countrymen for successful launching of Bangladesh's first communication satellite into space, saying that it added a new milestone to the path of continued advancement of the country.

The new "Block 5" Falcon 9 rocket took off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida at 4:14 p.m. EDT (20:14 GMT) and performed a flawless satellite launch that erased the memory of yesterday afternoon's boggled attempt. The much-awaited launch had to be pushed back nearly 24 hours, until the next launching opportunity became available.

Within 233 minutes of the launch the stage-2 rockets put Bangladesh's first communication satellite into the orbit and returned to earth. Then again, the notoriously fickle chap has also said he wants to begin retrieving the second stage of the Falcon, which would entail some major design changes in the future.

"Today (Friday) it aborted the launch just 42 seconds before launch". SpaceX also has a backup plan that involves switching from high-strength carbon fiber with an aluminum liner to the superalloy Inconel, but Musk believes this won't be necessary.

About eight minutes after lift-off, the first stage of the rocket safely landed on an autonomous drone ship floating more than 300 miles off the Atlantic coast.

" When Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is functional, Bangladesh will certainly be self-governing in regards to telecoms and also transmitting solutions, having the ability to supply interactions solutions to lots of global nations, such as Nepal, Myanmar or Bhutan under its insurance coverage location", the reps included.

The satellite is named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first President and the founding father of Bangladesh.

"The Bangabandhu satellite will help to make Bangladesh an advanced country", Shahjahan Mahmood, chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, which will manage the satellite, told the Dhaka Tribune.

" It's actually much better in every method compared to the Block 4", Musk stated, mentioning a series of upgrades from avionics to the thermal-protection sysem on the Block 5's initial stage. It's now recovered boosters back on land or sea 25 times. The newly minted Block 5 edition of the Falcon 9 is equipped with about 100 upgrades for greater power, safety, and reusability than its Block-4 predecessor, according to Reuters. "This rocket is truly created to be- the intent is to be one of the most trusted rocket ever before constructed.".
