Strategy Analytics in its report says the iPhone X captured 5 percent of the global smartphone market in Q1 2018, with 16 million units shipped.

Maestri told Reuters that clearing channel inventory of 1.8 million iPhones - majority iPhone X and iPhone 8 models - accounted for some of the difference.Profits were US$2.73 per share versus expectations of US$2.68 per share and up from US$2.10 a year ago. The iPhone X was followed by the iPhone 8 with 12.5 million units sold during the quarter.

Despite the high price tag of the iPhone X, the device has sold remarkably well, shipping over 50 million units since the device launched in November 2017.

Apple released three new iPhones a year ago, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the technology market.

It wasn't the only victor, either. However, the iPhones continue to remain the best-selling smartphone models with the iPhone 7 taking the fourth spot with 5.6 million units sold during the quarter. Globally, the total smartphone shipments was recorded at 345 million units in Q1.

Despite rumours of an underperforming iPhone X in the quarter, Apple stated that the iPhone X was the most popular model each week in the March quarter. Following Xiaomi is the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, closing up top five best selling smartphones. Boosted by the expensive iPhone X, Apple fetched an average of $728 per iPhone in this year's quarter, an 11 percent gain from last year's average of $655. Smart Portfolios LLC acquired a new position in Apple during the first quarter valued at approximately $134,000.

Apple surpassed expectations with its Q2 2018 earnings despite expectations that iPhone sales would begin to dwindle.

Apple iPhone X: Not a flop Apple fans and the industry pundits alike have been divided over the prospects of iPhone X. The polarising smartphone marked a stark departure from the company's approach to the design and overall user experience. In fact, reports suggest that there could be more good news coming in for Apple in the coming months. Older reports claimed that Apple had slashed production of the iPhone X by half. "I think the smartphone is sort of the best market for a consumer product company in the history of the world", Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday. Samsung's Galaxy S9 Plus comes in right behind it with 5.3 million shipments to round out the top six. Xiaomi marketed the device as "The smartphone for everyone" which seems to have been accurate seeing that they sold over 5.4 million units. Those were the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, and the latter of these racked up 17.4-million units shipped.
