'Boy' Will Be Dropped From Boy Scouts, As Girls Are Joining

GOP candidate’s blistering statement on Boy Scouts We need more ‘John Waynes,’ fewer ‘Pajama Boys Boy Scouts Remove 'Boy' from Name before Girls Enter their Ranks

"They had no idea that Girl Scouts does something like this".

The organization on Wednesday announced a new name for its Boy Scouts program: Scouts BSA.

But the Boy Scouts - the program for 11- to 17-year-olds - will now be Scouts BSA.

Her dad Bryan DeLeve, also an Eagle Scout, fully supports her.

This change will coincide with the timeline set for girls to join that program in all-girl Troops.

"Having both in the same organization keeps me sane", she said. No chartered partner will be forced to adopt a program for girls.

"They are trying to open this up, praying to God that this is going to save their organization from diminishing and the only thing that's going to save it from diminishing is for them to get unit leaders that will develop an outdoor program and get them out there camping", Sam Snoddy said.

Still, Girl Scouts of the U.S., a separate organization, which has opposed efforts by Boy Scouts of America to recruit girls to its ranks, said the name change was not much more than that - noting that it came without any new girl-focused programming. The Blue Mountain Council has participated in this Early Adopter program, with their first all-girls den joining Pack 117 in Kennewick this past January.

At the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, where enrollment is up for the third year in a row, CEO Nancy Wright took the opportunity to emphasize the differences between the boy and girl scouts.

"The research really shows that single-gender environments are important to girls development of confidence, competence and being connected with each other". In its peak years, BSA had more than 4 million participants.

"They will have the opportunity to earn the same ranks and participate in the same activities as the boys who participate now in that program".

Additional information on Family Scouting is available at the BSA's official Family Scouting website.

What are your thoughts on this progressive change?

Allowing girls into the organization allows busy families to consolidate programs for their kids, BSA says.

The Blue Mountain Council now serves over 4,300 young people, with more than 2,500 adult volunteer leaders. Cub Scouts serves children from kindergarten until the fifth grade.

Futrell is working on a Girl Scout-sanctioned research project exploring the impact of certain sunscreens on living coral. And they're not only changing their names... they're also changing their traditions.

Alexandra Silverstone, 9, has been a Girl Scout in Virginia for the past couple of years, where she's enjoyed doing arts and crafts, or meeting with professionals like a veterinarian that let her troop do "surgery" on stuffed animals.

So far, more than 3,000 girls have joined roughly 170 Cub Scout packs participating in the first phase of the new policy, and the pace will intensify this summer under a nationwide multimedia recruitment campaign titled "Scout Me In".

Many social media users also expressed differing opinions as the news trended on Twitter. Single-sex troops will have the chance to work toward the Eagle Scout rank.

"The name change is the latest piece of a culture shift within the storied organization, which in recent years has lifted its ban on gay and transgender members after years of debate".

Smith said it totally changes the dynamic of the Boy scouts.

The name change is a part of the group's attempt to appeal to a broader base, namely little girls.

Boy Scouts of the America has already started admitting girls into the Cub Scouts, and Scouts BSA will accept girls next year, according to the Associated Press. The Girl Scouts stayed the same.

Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh predicted that both boys and girls in Scouts BSA would refer to themselves simply as scouts, rather than adding "boy" or "girl" as a modifier.
