Thirteen miners have been trapped underground after an quake caused a South African gold mine to cave in.

Mantashe has urged rescue workers not to give up until all the trapped miners are accounted for. The company's shares recently dropped to two-year lows after a stronger rand squeezed profits and as it faces pressure to cut debt.

The union said it was "angry and concerned" at the rate at which health and safety incidents were happening at Sibanye-Stillwater.

Mining safety standards in South Africa, one of the world's largest producers of gold and other precious metals, have been called into question following a number of fatalities at mines across the country.

"Greater attention must be paid to issues of mine safety and protection of lives, as opposed to the insistence of chasing production", he said.

The Driefontein accident was caused by a seismic event at about 1:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sibanye said.

The South African Department of Mineral Resources and all unions were site to assist with the rescue efforts, Sibanye said in an emailed statement earlier. The six rescued miners have been hospitalised. "Mining is very unsafe and mineworkers risk life and limb daily to put bread on the table for their families", Amcu said.

One employee was fatally injured at the Driefontein operations on February 12 and two employees fatally injured at the Kloof operations on February 7.
