Government wants 'substantive' deal on future European Union relations by autumn, says Davis

This option would be more bureaucratic than if the United Kingdom stayed inside the customs union - but supporters argue it would guarantee that Britain would be able to complete deals with non-EU nations as the United Kingdom would no longer have to comply with EU tariff regulations.

The prime minister's spokesman said her views were "evolving" after 60 MPs signed a letter condemning proposals for a customs partnership as "Brexit in name only".

Under the customs partnership plan, Britain would collect tariffs on the EU's behalf at ports and airports, passing on a share of the cash to Brussels.

The Prime Minister is today chairing a meeting of her cabinet in which leading pro-Brexit ministers such as International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis are expected to push for Mrs.

As the prime minister navigates complex Brexit negotiations, she was dealt another blow with the resignation of one of her closest allies Sunday.

LONDON - Britain will face a stark choice when it comes to trade after Brexit: either stay closely aligned with the European Union or negotiate a comprehensive agreement with the United States of America.

Let me be clear: I think we could do a great deal more with new technology at our borders.

Mr Davis told the committee that there were no trials, and there had been no planning, on technological solutions because the European Union regarded the issue as part of the future trade relationship, and had refused to talk about such issues "until a certain point".

But May's government is split between pro-Brexit ministers such as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who want a clean break with the European Union, and those including Treasury chief Philip Hammond who want to stay close to the bloc to protect the economy. "It would leave us de facto in both the customs union and the single market". There are fears that any infrastructure introduced at the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland could destabilize the Peace Process.

"If they don't have confidence in Brexit we don't have confidence in them", an ERG source told The Telegraph.

"Brexit is the most important decision facing the country for a generation and it's vital that parliament - not the government - decides whether or not any Brexit deal is acceptable", Newby said.

But with the next round of talks in Brussels not due until late May, he suggested the prime minister could still delay narrowing her options too much.

The Guardian understands that neither the customs union, nor Brexit more generally, was brought up at Tuesday's meeting of the full cabinet.

He said: "Businesses need to know at the beginning of the implementation period what it is they are going to implement, so we have to have it nailed down - even legally - at the beginning of the implementation period".
