Amazon will be expanding Vancouver's tech hub by opening a new headquarters in the city's downtown core. The new facility is in addition to Amazon's current offices in Vancouver that includes its 156,000 square-foot location in TELUS Garden which opened to Amazon employees in 2015. Additionally in Vancouver, the human resources technology team helps build the HR, recruiting and employee management software systems that support Amazon's global workforce of over 560,000 employees. Governor Charlie Baker said the deal highlights the state's vibrant innovation ecosystem, while Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh called it "a tremendous vote of confidence in our economy". To date, more than 16,000 Amazonians have utilized the job-retraining programs globally. Its new building, set to begin construction later this year and open in 2021, would mark the company's biggest presence to date, and comes as Amazon opens a new office in nearby Fort Point.
Amazon now employs 6,000 people in its Toronto and Vancouver Tech Hubs to the AWS infrastructure region in Montreal area and also at its fulfilment facilities in British Columbia and Ontario.
