Apple to drop 3D Touch on entry level iPhones, will use Cover glass sensor
29 April, 2018, 00:41
The 3D touch technology is possibly the most underrated technologies that Apple has ever developed in the past decade.
Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most prominent names in the world of iPhone leaks, suggests that Apple won't be considering the inclusion of 3D Touch for the more affordable mainstream iPhone model of 2018 - the rumoured 6.1-inch iPhone with an LCD display.
Apple is reportedly going to launch three new iPhones this fall, two of which would be high-end smartphones with OLED screens, while one would be a 6.1-inch LCD model. Kuo believes Apple will then drop the 3D Touch functionality so the company doesn't have to increase the cost of the phone.
The 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED iPhone models in 2018 will both retain the 3D Touch feature. As reported, the 3D Touch elimination on this particular model may be just the beginning and by the starting of the year 2019, the functionality might be eliminated from all of the iPhone models. This updated display will supposedly raise the total cost of screen construction to between $23 and $26. Though it's hard to imagine for anyone to be disappointed if this feature was to be removed, there are a bunch of 3D Touch loyalists out there, as Gizmodo notes, and they swear by its convenience.
If Apple made a decision to not include 3D Touch, it'd be interesting to see what users think, as the feature is considered useful by some and pointless by others. In accordance with Ming-Chi Kuo, the renowned Apple analyst, the handset features a Cover Glass Sensor situated on the surface of the screen of the device, rather than the touch sensors built into the display like the previous phones of the company.
Apple's upcoming entry-level 6.1-inch iPhone has been in the news for quite a time now. To keep the costs low, Apple might ditch 3D Touch.
