As ABC News has reported this morning, the U.S. Senate voted unanimously to allow the rule change in response to a proposal by Sen.

Earlier this month, she became the first sitting senator to give birth while in office.

Senator Tammy Duckworth has said parenthood isn't just a women's issue.

Still, her presence was felt. considering up until Wednesday, children of any age were not allowed to be on the Senate floor during votes. "Not sure what the policy is on duckling onesies but I think we're ready".

After there were complaints about how having a nursing newborn among the mostly male Senate might affect the political body's "decorum", Richard Armande Mills took to Twitter to express misgivings. With the new rule, she will be able to bring her daughter if she's called in for a late-night meeting and breastfeed while on the floor, an aide told ABC News. In fact, Duckworth's resolution nearly certainly will change Senate culture-and that's a good thing. Back in 2009, senator Kirsten Gillibrand was asked to preside over the Senate from 5 to 7pm, which was when she needed to nurse her son.

Newborn babies will be allowed on the Senate floor, following a request from Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., father of three and grandfather of six. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., ranking member of the committee.

Klobuchar's answer to that suggestion noted that Duckworth is a double-amputee who lost both legs and partial use of an arm in Iraq, and mostly gets around by wheelchair.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the rule is also narrowly written to allow parents of children under a year to perform their duties without being separated from their children, and to allow the business of the Senate to go on uninterrupted. Many of the Senate's current rules and traditions are out of touch with contemporary society, and can certainly make female senators (of which there are now 22) feel unwelcome.

There was more, voiced privately, Klobuchar said - including whether Duckworth meant to change Maile's diaper or nurse her new baby on the Senate floor.

"I think it will do us good in the United States Senate, every once in a while, to see a pacifier next to the antique inkwells on our desk or a diaper bag next to one of these brass spittoons which sits on the floor, thank goodness, never used", said Sen.
