Omo-Agege, a member of the ruling party was reported to have objected to the move which led to his suspension from the Senate.

Concluding, the statement quoted the Deputy Senate President as saying that, "We are determined to conclude all matters slated on the Order Paper for today, even if it means sitting until 6pm".

"Following the said media reports on the Mace issue, the Police authorities made a decision to hear from Senator Omo-Agege".

Immediately after the session ended, officers with the Nigeria Police led him into a waiting police van.

The former vice-president noted that it was inconceivable that hoodlums could force their way into the Senate and take away the mace.

In 2000, the then-Senate president himself allegedly removed the mace from the chamber and took it to his hometown in a dispute with his deputy over the resumption date after recess.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Senate's media and public affairs chairman Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi condemned the incident as an "act of treason".

The federal government has ordered a probe of the invasion of the senate on Wednesday.

"This speaks to the kind of fractures that we're going to see as 2019 approaches", independent political analyst Chris Ngwodo said in an interview with Bloomberg.

"So, we need to tell these people who are pretenders that they are not practicing democracy because it is the assembly that defines democracy".

He expressed the support of the House to Senate's resolution that the Nigerian police should recover the mace within 24 hours.

Reacting to the incident, Sani in a tweet said the invasion is an open and undisguised assault on our democracy and a desecration of our constitution.
