Three IRGC members martyred in attack on Syrian airfield

Syria was already on edge, braced for military retaliation from the United States, when missiles struck an air base near Palmyra in the east of the province of Homs in the pre-dawn hours, prompting accusations from the Syrian Government that U.S. forces were responsible.

SANA reported that the missile attack on the T4 military air base in Homs province resulted in a number of casualties. "However, we continue to closely watch the situation and support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable". Syrian rescuers and medics say a poison gas attack on Douma has killed at least 40 people.

While still not explicitly admitting to the T-4 base strike, Israel Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the Jewish state would not back down in confronting creeping Iranian hegemony.

The Israeli military has been placed on high alert along the fraught northern border after Iran threatened retaliation for an airstrike on a Syrian airbase on Monday that killed seven of its countrymen.

The US envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Washington "will respond" to the attack regardless of whether the UN Security Council acts or not. He said that Washington had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria.

It said that the government of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad "must be held accountable for its continued human rights abuses".

US President Donald Trump has warned of retaliatory action for a suspected chemical weapons attack on Saturday in eastern Ghouta, an insurgent stronghold near Damascus.

"With the Syrian army having the upper hand on the ground against the armed terrorists, it would not be rational for it to use chemical weapons", the statement said. Israel has also struck inside Syria in recent years.

In Block's view, "whatever the debate over the JCPOA - the nuclear agreement signed between Iran, six world powers and the European Union in 2015 - a robust consensus in Congress is needed that Iran's military role in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere must be countered".

In October, the panel released a damning report that found the Syrian air force had dropped sarin on the rebel-held village of Khan Sheikhun in April 2017, killing scores of people.

The Syrian regime has also been blamed for using chlorine gas on three villages in 2014 and 2015.
