'We are acting on the advice of police and civil administration, ' railway official said, adding that the decision to suspend train service was being taken for the security and safety of passengers and railway property.

An encounter began between security forces and militants in Khudwani area of J&K's Kulgam district in the early hours of Wednesday.

The encounter started late on Tuesday night between terrorists and security forces at Khudwani area of Kulgam district.

As the fighting raged, people poured out of their homes and pelted stones at the security forces even as two-to-three militants from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) reportedly remained holed up inside the house.

That the three militants, one of them seriously injured, had escaped became clear after the rubble of the house were cleared, police officials said.

Sarjeel Ahmad (25), Faisal Ilahi (14) and Bilal Ahamad Tantray (16) succumbed to injuries at a hospital, they said.

The Chief Minister said there is an urgent need to get together to get Jammu & Kashmir out of this vicious cycle of violence and killings. Witnesses added that an Army gunship helicopter was also used during the operation. The sources said two to three militants managed to escape from the cordoned area.

"In the encounter, four civilians, who were injured in the cross fire, have succumbed to their injuries", a police spokesman said.

Reports said as the encounter was going on hundreds of people marched towards the gunfight site and tried to disrupt the anti-insurgency operation.

Four injured civilians have been referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

Following the encounter, the Internet services are suspended in Kulgam and Anantnag districts of South Kashmir.

Protests were also held at National Institute of Engineering in Srinagar.

In a statement, the pro-independence leadership in the region called for a two-day shutdown in protest against the killings.
