Oklahoma middle school teacher confesses to sexually assaulting student

These are Oklahoma teachers' demands as strike extends a 7th day Oklahoma teacher strike to extend a 7th day

Keri Hoffman, a 35-year-old middle school algebra teacher, told police she'd had sex multiple times with a 15-year-old student - including during the ongoing teacher walkout in the state. They are asking the Oklahoma Legislature to provide $50 million more in funding and to repeal a capital gains tax exemption. Arizona and Kentucky teachers have voiced their frustrations regarding teachers' salary and education underfunding.

Tens of thousands of teachers have come to the Capitol each working day since the strike started April 2 calling for increased spending for an education system where inflation-adjusted general funding per student dropped by 28.2 percent between 2008 and 2018, the biggest reduction of any state, according to the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The Oklahoma Education Association is paying for the port-a-potties, busses to transport teachers and the stage and sound equipment.

Fallin recently approved a $6,100 pay raise for teachers, but Oklahoma teachers said this is not enough.

Teachers want a $10,000 raise over three years.

The Oklahoma strike comes amid a wave of action by teachers in states where budgets have been cut. Instead of diverting money to education funding, the state cut income taxes and severance tax rates on oil and gas.

The walkout closed public schools serving about 500,000 of the state's 700,000 students on Monday, and schools in the state's largest cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, were shut again on Tuesday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has more than 100 extra troopers from across the state providing additional security and traffic control both inside and outside the Capitol.

"Momentum is on our side", Priest said in the video.
