The broader NSE index was down 0.18 percent at 10,383.05 as of 0545 GMT, while the benchmark BSE index was 0.07 percent lower at 33,856.84.

The 30-share Sensex resumed higher and advanced to 33,981.54, but soon slipped on profit-taking to touch a low of 33,750.74, before settling up 60.19 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 33,940.44.

Around 9.16 a.m., the wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) inched up by 12.45 points or 0.12 per cent to trade at 10,414.70 points. The gauge had risen 774.47 points in the previous three sessions.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 1300.93 crore while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 359.35 crore on Monday, a provisional data showed.

On the other hand, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.83%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.34%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.06%), Infosys (0.62%), Wipro (0.53%) and Reliance Industries (0.52%) were the biggest gainers in the Sensex. Dwarkesh Sugar was up by 10.35 percent, Balrampur Chini by 5.08 percent and Triveni by 5.02 percent.

According to market observers, healthy buying in metals, banking and capital goods stocks supported the equity indices' northward trajectory.

Majority of the Asian markets are flat in early trading on Tuesday. In the broader market, BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices slipped up to 0.5 per cent. Nasdaq gained over 0.51 percent while S&P 500 was up by 0.33 percent.
