A man who chose to eat what's known as the world's hottest chili pepper, the Carolina Reaper, went to the emergency room after experiencing striking, severe head pain for days.

Gunasekaran and Dr. Gregory Cummings, the neurologist on the case, eventually diagnosed the man with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, or RCVS, probably caused by the hot peppers.

A team of doctors from NY and MI published details of an unusual medical case to the journal BMJ Case Reports this week and it reads like a culinary horror story.

The 34-year-old man was rushed to hospital after eating one "Carolina Reaper" chilli and developing intense neck and head pains that resulted in the headache pains over several days, according to a report in the British Medical Journal. But then a pain in his neck and head came on like.?.?. a thunderclap.

It took five weeks for the patients' blood vessels to return to normal.

RCVS is characterised by temporary artery narrowing often accompanied by a thunderclap headache.

This isn't the first time Ed Currie, who owns the PuckerButt Pepper Company where the super-hot chilis are grown, has had the honor of claiming of the hottest pepper in the world.

"Given the development of symptoms immediately after exposure to a known vasoactive substance, it is plausible that our patient had RCVS secondary to the 'Carolina Reaper, '" the doctors concluded. The thunderclap headaches reoccurred over the next few days.

In comparison, a Jalapeno pepper typically rates between 2,500 to 5,000 units on the scale - around 400 times less than a Carolina Reaper.

Carolina Reaper has been given the title of hottest chilli since 2017.

They noted the condition can be caused by a reaction to certain prescription drugs, or after taking illegal drugs.

This disorder occurs when contraction of the blood vessels cause the arteries to narrow temporarily.

Dr Kulothungan Gunasekaran, at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, who wrote the report, said people need to be aware of these risks, if eating the chilli.

Doctors say the case report should make other health care providers aware that RCVS can be brought on by eating chili peppers.

Speaking of symptoms, the man did not show any sign of stroke because he did not have any kind of neurological deficits such as slurred speech or muscle weakness. He achieved this accomplishment by consuming 120 grams of the pepper in 60 seconds at the Arizona Hot Sauce Expo in November 2016.

This is the first case to be associated with eating chili peppers.
