Hubbard set to quit lifting after injury

On Monday, the 40-year-old weightlifter dislocated her left elbow as she attempted a Games record 132kg for her last snatch lift in the 90kg+ final at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

Hubbard allegedly made her changeover to be girl at the time of 35 and now she has fulfilled each criteria below Commonwealth Games policies to qualify for its ladies's over-90kg lifting celebration.

Hubbard's third lift - an attempt to break her personal best of 131kg - went horribly wrong when Hubbard dropped the bar behind her and the athlete's elbow twisted awkwardly, leading to a withdrawal before the clean and jerk phase.

"At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury".

A transgender weightlifter's competition ended in injury, but her participation is still a victory for equality.

Despite doing everything she could do to prove she deserved her place in the event, Hubbard was forced to endure repeated attempts to stop her from taking part.

Having shunned the pre-competition spotlight - the New Zealander arrived on the Gold Coast later than the rest of her teammates - the focus was very much on the 40-year-old who has split opinion in recent months.

Hubbard said it was likely she'd ruptured a ligament and sustained "some fairly significant tissue damage".

Laurel Hubbard previously competed below the title Gavin Hubbard Ahead of transitioning to a woman.

"I have no regrets about the attempts I made, because I believe that to be true to sport you really have to try to be the best that you can, and I'm happy with the decisions that were made".

Feagaiga Stowers took full advantage of Hubbard's misfortune, earning her nation a second gold medal of the day following Sanele Mao's triumph in the men's 105kg.

Not one of the different lifters, together with Australia's Deb Loveley-Acason, obtained anyplace close to Hubbard's mark.

Australian Weightlifting Federation chief Michael Keelan even tried to have the ruling on Hubbard overturned.

"I'm not here to change the world, I'm just here to be myself".

In Hubbard's absence, Stowers won the gold with a total of 253, followed by Charisma Amoe-Tarrant of Nauru (243) and Emily Campbell of England (242).

There was warm applause from the venue's crowd when Hubbard lifted but some spectators said she should not have been allowed to compete as a woman.

Commentators have been shocked by the damage with Kiwi sporting identities pushing for Hubbard to hold the Kiwi flag into the closing ceremony earlier within the week.
