Arizona officials announced they were sending 225 National Guard members to the border Monday and pledged to deploy another 113 on Tuesday. The troops were sent to the town of Marana, northwest of Tucson, according to Ducey's spokesperson, Patrick Ptak. New Mexico says it will. California is undecided.

"This is a step up from the militarization, something we just absolutely don't need", said Pedros Rios. "The Guard will provide air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of border infrastructure and logistical support".

At a National Guard center in Phoenix, the Governor told the troops they'll make Arizona and the country safer.

A very powerful dedication comes from Texas, the place Gov. Greg Abbott suggested San Antonio radio station KTSA that he would add about 300 troops each week until the complete amount reaches not lower than 1,000 troops.

Last week, President Donald Trump said, "Until we can have a wall and proper security, we're going to be guarding our border with the military".

"This mission is about providing manpower and resources to support federal, state, county, tribal and local law enforcement agencies in stopping the flow of criminals, narcotics, weapons and ammunition that is being trafficked into our state", Ducey said. On Friday, Defense Secretary James Mattis signed a memo approving U.S. Department of Defense funding through September for up to 4,000 troops along the border.

There is no end date for the deployment, Abbott said: "We may be in this for the long haul".

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Hull says troops are nowhere near deploying yet. "You show me somebody who is for drug cartels or human trafficking or this ammunition that's coming over a wide-open and unprotected border here".

The deployment came after Texas National Guard commander Brigadier General Tracy Norris announced on Friday that she was moving 250 troops to the state's own border with Mexico within 72 hours, "with supporting aircraft, vehicles and equipment".

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's office said that more than 80 troops would deploy later this week.

President Barack Obama sent 1,200 troops in 2010 and President George W. Bush sent 6,200 to the border in 2006 as part of Operation Jump Start.

In California, Brown's spokesman, Evan Westrup, said Monday that state officials are still reviewing Trump's troop request.

Joel Villarreal, the mayor of Rio Grande City in Texas, said he did not agree with what he characterized as "the militarization of the border".
