Sandberg outlined some of the steps the company is taking to fix the damage: On Monday, Facebook will begin notifying the 87 million users whose information may have been compromised and given to Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm used by the Trump campaign. "AggregateIQ works in full compliance within all legal and regulatory requirements in all jurisdictions where it operates".

Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committee on Tuesday to discuss Facebook's role in society and users' privacy.

Facebook has been in damage control mode and has been trying to assure users and investors about its security measures.

Last month a former Cambridge Analytica (CA) employee, Chris Wylie, told a United Kingdom parliamentary committee that the London-based company, deeply embedded in the ongoing data mining scandal, had potentially shared some of its Facebook harvested data with the Canadian AggregateIQ consultancy, which is accused of targeting social media users for political campaigns - including during the 2016 USA election and the UK's Brexit campaign.

Currently, users can only delete messages from their own inboxes which will still show up in the recipient's thread.

Facebook confessed to TechCrunch that they have been doing this for a while.

It is not clear how the feature would look like, but Facebook already has an encrypted messaging feature that includes an Unsend expiration timer.

Facebook added: "We are working with third parties to develop a list of key issues, which we will refine over time".

Australian authorities say they are investigating whether Facebook breached the country's privacy law when personal information of more than 300,000 Australian users was obtained by Cambridge Analytica, a Trump-linked political consulting firm, without their authorization. Facebook notes this is similar to how the retractions of Zuckerberg's messages worked.

The statement continued, "This may take some time".

At our recent NNPA (National Newspapers Publishers Conference) held in Las Vegas, Facebook sent a brilliant Black female representative to teach us how to more effectively access its data and make our dataavailable to them. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives' messages.

He works in Facebook's "Building 8", which the company describes as and internal division designed to "create and ship new, category-defining consumer hardware products that are social first". "We should have done this sooner - and we're sorry that we did not", said Facebook to TechCrunch.
