This is the Jacob Zuma who boldly addressed crowds outside the Durban High Court minutes after his brief appearance on 16 charges related to fraud and corruption.

Judge Themba Sishi announced the adjournment that was proposed by the state and supported by the defense Friday at the High Court in Durban.

In October 2017, after a marathon legal campaign by the DA party, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Zuma was liable for prosecution over nearly 800 counts of corruption relating to a 1990s arms deal.

The adviser, Schabir Shaikh, was found guilty of trying to solicit the bribes and was jailed in 2005.The case against Mr Zuma was dropped shortly before he ran for president in 2009.

The charges are politically motivated, Zuma said.

Answers to parliamentary questions reveal that the funding of Zuma's battles against his prosecution has so far cost taxpayers at least R32.4-million.

He was replaced as president by his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, who has promised a robust campaign against corruption and also wants to rebuild a ruling party whose moral stature has diminished since it took power at the end of white minority rule in 1994.

But most South Africans see the case as bringing much-needed accountability to the country's politicians, and a more than welcome development after nine years of Zuma administrations marked by economic stagnation and widespread corruption.

After years of legal challenges, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) last month decided Zuma must face trial.

It seems Jacob Zuma's legal woes keep mounting. "They will exhaust every avenue to appeal and that will take about two to three years", Hoffman said.

The decision by ANC to make the way clear for Zuma is contrary to its previous public displays of support and defense of Zuma during the 2006 rape trial and previous attempts to charge him for corruption.

South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma defiant outside court on Friday, . He resigned February 14 on the orders of his celebration, the African National Congress.

The former president thanked his supporters for prayers before taking an indirect swipe at the ANC for deciding against rallying behind him.

At the core is an allegation that Mr Zuma accepted a bribe to help Thales win a multi-million dollar government contract - allegations Mr Zuma denies. But the Civil society and opposition parties have worked tirelessly to have the charges reinstated.
