Apple CEO Tim Cook believes Facebook should have regulated itself

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes Facebook should have regulated itself Apple CEO Tim Cook believes Facebook should have regulated itself

Apple's CEO Tim Cook took some digs at his fellow tech giant by calling out on Facebook for selling its users" data besides, criticising Amazon's "contest' for new headquarters.

The CEO noted that comparison in the interview, saying "we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer - if our customer was our product".

"We've elected not to do that", Cook explained, according to Recode.

At the annual China Development Forum in Beijing last week, Cook said there was a need for "well-crafted regulation" to prevent users' information being peddled around without their knowledge. I think best regulation is no regulation, self-regulation. "I wouldn't be in this situation", he said.

"Nobody does that", joked Swisher, to which Cook responded: "I'm not making fun of it!" We make sure all the movies are coded in such a way where you can say, "I only want my child looking at G movies", or whatever, or we have a parental control around apps. I think it's an invasion of privacy. Cook feels this sort of data collection is a result of Facebook treating their users as the product instead of the customer. It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America.

Just days earlier, Cook criticized Facebook for their ostensible lack of care when it comes to users' data, specifically the partnership it had with Cambridge Analytica - the analytics firm that worked with President Donald Trump's campaign. China was given the infamous title of the worst abuser of internet freedom for a third year in a row, due to government censorship and restrictions of basic online services and an nearly complete lack of digital privacy. Lawmakers have also floated tougher rules on the company and two Congressional committees have formally invited the Facebook CEO to testify.

However, Cook appears to have worked out that Apple's target market is not right-wing neo-conservative Christians in the USA bible belt, but young upwardly mobile kids in cities who have more money than sense and know little about technology.

MSN has a more comprehensive write up at the link below and the full "Revolution" interview with Tim Cook will air Friday, April 6 at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT on MSNBC.

Still, Cook's comments to MSNBC clearly indicate there will be no porn-related apps on the App Store any time soon.
