Toyota RAV4: this is it!

2019 Toyota RAV4: looking more SUV than crossover First Look: With the 2019 RAV4, Toyota gives its best-selling crossover a new rugged look

"RAV4 is exceeding our expectations, becoming our sales leader a year ago with more than 400,000 sales", Bill Fay, head of USA sales for the Toyota brand, said at an industry conference in ny ahead of Wednesday's reveal.

It's built on Toyota's new TNGA platform, which will eventually underpin all the maker's models in some form.

The new generation of the RAV4 is a highly anticipated one, given the fact that the range has not gotten a proper upgrade since the release of the 2013 model year version. Entry-level models can be optioned with the carryover AWD system, hybrids are available with AWD-i, and a new-to-Toyota dynamic torque vectoring AWD, which will be standard on Limited gasoline models and Adventure grade RAV4s.

The compact SUV is quickly distinguished from the previous edition by a large new central grille at the front and by its mirrors, which are now attached to the doors and no longer the A-pillars for improved visibility.

Unfortunately for fans of the original model, the RAV4 has lost much of its initial identity (established on the first and second generations) in terms of styling. Other updates include new upholstery, and revised interiors along with small add-ons like - USB ports, wireless phone chargers, and an optional 800-watt JBL sound system.

Manoeuvrability has always been a virtue of the RAV4 and this has not been compromised in the new design. There's the standard 2.5L four-cylinder that's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission or if you want something a more fuel efficient you can get the RAV4 Hybrid with the same 2.5L four-cylinder that's mated to an electric motor and CVT. Toyota says in the news release that this allows the vehicle to send 50 percent of the torque to its rear wheels or distribute to either the left or right side.

Without mentioning numbers, Toyota says the new RAV4 offers better rear-seat width and legroom, both of which were excellent before.

The 2019 RAV4 is actually shorter and wider than its predecessor. Hybrid models will arrive in showrooms in 2019. It comes with piano-black exterior accents on the fender arches and mirror caps, lower rockers and the front end, as well as a 2-tone paint scheme with a standard black roof. The all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4 gas models will hit the dealerships during the late 2018 and the hybrid model will available in early 2019. It looks less well-integrated than some competitors but offers a high degree of features including standard Apple CarPlay.

Toyota has confirmed every single 2019 RAV4 sold in Australia will come with an extensive safety equipment package consisting of a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian detection and auto emergency braking (AEB), radar cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and auto high-beam headlights.
