Along with search engine and hosting on its own site, the company offers a number of its own apps - "GIF keyboards" for Android and iOS that allow users to insert animated GIFs into any conversation they are having on their mobile device. Google also announced in 2016 that it was prioritizing sites built with the open source Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) in mobile search, so that may be a good place to start in developing a mobile strategy. But now, with mobile-first indexing, the mobile version of the page will be used by Google for indexing and ranking and this will benefit the mobile searchers.

After the mobile first indexing is being enabled, the sites will see more traffic from the Googlebot Smartphone.

Mobile-first indexing allows Google to provide people searching for things with websites that are specifically optimized for the platform they are searching on.

[FREE DOWNLOAD: Benchmark report: How journalists use social media]... We suppose in theory it could mean less loading times which could make it more mobile-friendly. We do evaluate all content in our index - whether it is desktop or mobile - to determine how mobile-friendly it is. "However, our ranking systems still typically look at the desktop version of a page's content to evaluate its relevance to the user", the company explained in a blog post. Tenor sees itself as a search business that's central to mobile messaging, the company's Chief Business Officer Jason Krebs told Marketing Dive earlier this year.

The news underscores the importance of visual shorthands like GIFs in communicating on mobile as well as Google's desire to not be shut out of an increasingly popular mobile marketing tactic.

Inbound marketers have been following the rise of mobile marketing for years, but considering how ingrained mobile devices are in our lives as both consumers and professionals today, it shouldn't really be considered a "trend".
