The Jaguar i-Pace might be one of the most significant electric vehicles to be released, but it's now going to be a poster child for autonomous technology, too.

"While we've been focused at Waymo on building the world's most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design, and capability", Krafcik said in a statement.

The ride-hailing network of Waymo's autonomous vehicles will compete with Uber and Lyft, which are also working on developing their own self-driving technology. Together they are positioning the hot new I-Pace electric vehicle firmly at the pointy end of the next frontier in mobility. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, has been busy already this year, with talk of applying its autonomous driving tech to trucks and releasing an impressive 360-degree video explaining how it all works. The I-PACE is all-wheel drive, but there's no driveshaft running the length of the SUV to connect the rear wheels to the front.

Waymo may not be charging for its autonomous vehicle trials right now, but the company knows that it'll need something more special than a minivan when the digital driver wants paying. The ultimate goal: "with Waymo as the driver, products tailored for every objective and every trip", said Waymo in a post on medium.

It's that which has helped fast-track the Waymo I-PACE into testing later this year, of course.

The new Jaguar I-PACE will be outfitted with Waymo's self-driving technology. Anyone can hail a ride from the autonomous auto in the city starting later this year, though the Jags will not be for sale for the general public.

The Waymo I-Pace features the numerous sensors and lidar arrays required for driverless transportation but integrated into a vehicle more than before.

The Jaguar I-Pace is expected to join Waymo's planned autonomous taxi fleet by 2020.

"That Waymo is moving forward shows a lot of confidence", commented Tim Stevens, editor-in-chief of news site Roadshow.com.
