In a statement, the poll watchdog referred to a tweet by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya in which he had put out the election date minutes before CEC OP Rawat actually announced the schedule at a press conference.

To a question on whether the Commission would announce new dates if it is found that there has been a leak of the election schedule, Rawat chose to remain non-committal, saying, "One can not comment on that". He said the date of notification is April 17 and the last date to file nominations is 24 April. The last date for withdrawal is April 27.

Malviya wrote on Twitter, before deleting the tweet: "Karnataka will vote on 12 May 2018, counting on 18 May 2018".

This time in Karnataka, like all other recent polls, VVPAT machines will be deployed along with EVMs. The Congress is now having 122 seats against BJP which has about 43 seats., The elections are so positive for Congress party wherein the BJP is under bigger problems for the state.

BJP president Amit Shah, who is on a two-day tour in the election-bound Karnataka, accused the Congress government of being anti-farmer and not doing enough to solve the agrarian issues in the state. Worth mentioning here for Karnataka Legislative Assembly Polls there are 4 carores, 96 lakhs voters. The 224-member House expires on May 28 this year.

Congress' social media in charge Srivatsa had also tweeted before the official announcement.

Reacting to Malviya's tweet, Congress" chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted: "BJP becomes the "Super Election Commission' as they announce poll dates for Karnataka even before the EC".

The previous assembly polls were held on May 5 in 2013 in a single phase, with 2,948 candidates in the fray.

Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday categorically said Janata Dal (Secular) go with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the post-poll alliance. As of now, the BJP is ruling in most Indian states, except in the four southern states.
