"March For Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar", the website says.

Dashay McCrae, 18, who has lost a close cousin to gun violence, said she was ready to be heard.

Caprock High School teachers also came out today to show support for their students.

At Caras Park Saturday morning, 11-year old Asher Barnes and his 8-year-old sister Cora told the hundreds of adults before them that something needs to change.

Her daughters, Dianna and Deanna Milleret, are 16-year-old twins, both sophomores at Stoneman Douglas. "The movement is calling for universal background checks, a ban or age restrictions on so-called assault weapons, the repeal of the National Rifle Association-backed Dickey Amendment preventing the Centers for Disease Control from work that promotes gun control, and an end to the NRA and other lobbying groups" influence in politics.

"I'm here to march for all my students in the future so I'm not going to stand around and say I didn't do anything during this time where students are going to school everyday, afraid that they can be shot and I'm just not going to stand by and let that happen", he says. "We know what the root of the problem is", "(Lawmakers) don't want to make the gun laws strong enough", said Tyra Hemans, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

"This is how it begins", Police Chief Troy Oswald said motioning out over the crowd.

"I'm sick of the violence".

These students rap, conduct interviews and produce all sorts of media to express what's on their minds.

"I'll tell you the turning point was these kids down there", he said.

"This epidemic affects us all", he said.

Surrey public school teacher Annie O'Hana is one of the organizers, and said she's expecting hundreds of students to attend, including about 30 from her own school.

The Washington Post reported that television personality Oprah Winfrey and actor George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney each donated Dollars 500,000 to the march.

"I just wanted to make sure they did have a voice and really be able to reach some of those audiences with what they do", said Michael Finney, the club's adviser.

I remember the day of Virginia Tech, sitting in my social studies class as the teacher explained to us what was happening. The latest wave of demands for stricter gun laws have been spurred largely by the student activists who survived the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

I was hopeful that Parkland would spark people to take action, but I also knew the road ahead would be hard.

Stoneman Douglas students have been the driving force behind the march, badgering United States lawmakers to enact a ban on assault rifles and to expand background checks to cover all gun purchases, even private sales.

It's "not OK" that parents like hers should have wonder if "I'm going to go to school and I'm going to come back alive or with a bullet wound". "Much more than those of us who were not there, they will never forget this".

Catholic mom Liz Mora of Washington said she found hope in the day.
