Nearly 100 English football fans were arrested in Amsterdam last night ahead of their friendly game against the Netherlands.

Amsterdam police posted a statement on their official Twitter account which provided detail on the arrests in the city centre.

As well as the 100 fans detained on Friday, a further 25 were arrested on Thursday with Dutch authorities claiming some of them attacked officers.

The irony in all of this is that England fans have been warned about heading out east to follow their national side at the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation later this year.

Deputy chief constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) head for football policing, believes the behaviour of a "large number" of supporters will have long-term ramifications for those wanting to travel overseas to watch England.

"35 spent the night in a cell complex".

By early afternoon on Friday there had been one arrest, but police say there have been several fights and some fans are looking for trouble.

Glass can be heard smashed as the friendly fixture continues to be marred by videos emerging of trouble in Amsterdam.

Southgate had urged supporters to behave on the eve of Friday's friendly, but those words were clearly ignored by some of the 5,253 fans in the away section.

A total of 27 members were suspended for their behaviour in Dortmund.

An Amsterdam police spokesman had told Press Association Sport: "We arrested 90 English people, mainly because they were disturbing the peace".

"As ever, the FA will work in partnership with the UK Football Policing Unit to help identify those involved and we will sanction any England Supporters Travel Club member found to be responsible for disorder".

"They are representing our country in the same way we are".

"But I would strongly urge them to behave in the right way and respect our opponents and the country they're in".
