Spurred by the deaths of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last month, the teenage-led protesters in D.C. are marching to end gun violence.

"We saw it we realized, 'hey, this didn't just happen to them, it happens to us all the time, it just didn't happen on a larger scale like it did to them, '" she said.

"They like to believe we're puppets; they like to believe that we're being controlled by someone else because. they don't want to believe that human beings have this power because if they have this power then they might not need a gun", Deitsch said. Droves of people also rallied on the steps of the Michigan Capitol that same day just hours after the walkout.

"This is a call to action to our Congress and state legislators", Fanaeiau said.

The student activists also hope to elevate gun control as a key issue in the coming midterm elections, and to build support for candidates with whom they are aligned on issues such as universal background checks and bans on assault-style weapons.

A group called HeadCount is sending roughly 5,000 volunteers to register people at 30 marches across the country.
