Spurred by the deaths of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last month, the teenage-led protesters in D.C. are marching to end gun violence.

"We saw it we realized, 'hey, this didn't just happen to them, it happens to us all the time, it just didn't happen on a larger scale like it did to them, '" she said.

"They like to believe we're puppets; they like to believe that we're being controlled by someone else because. they don't want to believe that human beings have this power because if they have this power then they might not need a gun", Deitsch said. Droves of people also rallied on the steps of the Michigan Capitol that same day just hours after the walkout.

"This is a call to action to our Congress and state legislators", Fanaeiau said.

The student activists also hope to elevate gun control as a key issue in the coming midterm elections, and to build support for candidates with whom they are aligned on issues such as universal background checks and bans on assault-style weapons.

A group called HeadCount is sending roughly 5,000 volunteers to register people at 30 marches across the country.

Dorantes told Crux that the Sunday after the Parkland shooting - which occurred on Ash Wednesday - he dedicated his homily to the subject of gun violence and the havoc it's wreaked on both the nation and his parish's own neighborhood. "My mother didn't let me because we were afraid of gunshots, so I was an inside kid, and I feel like that affected me a lot".

Saturday's march in D.C. will begin at noon with a rally on Pennsylvania Avenue between Third Street and 12th Street Northwest.

Saturday's demonstrations followed a March 14 nationwide student school walkout over gun violence that came exactly a month after an expelled 19-year-old student strode onto his Parkland campus and allegedly shot 17 former classmates and educators to death with a military-style rifle. We are not safe at school. "And while I sympathize with numerous mass shootings that have happened at school, this is something that happens to our young people every day", Nadine said. The majority were expected to be teenagers, many students, from around the country.

March For Our Lives will help gauge whether students can sustain the momentum of their movement and push lawmakers to act.

Pugh said she proudly stands with the students.
