I am extremely grateful for the work of Senator Thad Cochran.

As word trickled out of Mississippi Monday that Hyde-Smith was going to get the appointment, Sen.

Cochran, who is 80, is stepping down April 1 because of poor health.

"I congratulate Governor Bryant on his historic selection of Cindy Hyde-Smith to represent MS in the United States Senate". "Her service as the Co-chairman of the Agriculture Policy Advisory Council for President Donald Trump has been instrumental in ensuring MS farmers and ranchers a voice during key decision making". The regulation of catfish and a similar species from Asia has been key to the domestic catfish industry.

The Latest on a replacement for Mississippi Sen.

She highlighted her support for Second Amendment rights and opposition to abortion, as well as advocacy for the state's defense business.

"I look forward to being her colleague and working with her to serve all Mississippians".

She would immediately begin campaigning for a November 6 nonpartisan special election to fill the rest of Cochran's term, which expires in January 2020. Hyde-Smith will be the first woman to represent MS in Congress.

The McDaniel campaign has published an open letter urging President Trump to refrain from endorsing Hyde-Smith. That special election will be November 6.

Before getting to that point, though, Hyde-Smith will have to deal with what could be a strong primary challenge. Espy in 1986 became the first African-American in modern times to win a congressional seat in MS, and he has publicly supported both Democrats and Republicans in various races. McDaniel had announced a year ago that he would be challenging Senator Roger Wicker, who is up for re-election in November, but decided in recent weeks to switch his candidacy to the race for Cochran's seat, a fact that makes it significantly more likely that McDaniel could win the primary and, by extension, the General Election given Mississippi's status as a strongly red state.

"I am truly humbled and honored that Gov. Phil Bryant has asked me to serve as your next U.S. Senator", Hyde-Smith said.

"Today, I was troubled to learn that Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant dutifully followed the orders of the Washington establishment's Mitch McConnell by appointing Cindy Hyde-Smith to fill the temporary vacancy created by Senator Thad Cochran's retirement", said McDaniel in a press statement.

Bryant responded that he meant to pick Hyde-Smith for the post, anyway.

That is the hometown of Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican who was first elected agriculture commissioner in 2011.

A poll from the National Republican Senatorial Committee showed the race for the seat in November as tight, with Hyde-Smith and McDaniel both trailing a generic Democratic candidate, Politico reported.

The conversation was described by two White House aides with direct knowledge of the call.

Tea party-backed Republican state Sen.

She was a registered Democrat until 2010 when she switched to the Republican party. Some worry that if it comes down to McDaniel and a Democrat, his hard-right views could swing centrist Republican voters toward the Democrat. He also served three terms in the House of Representatives.

Administration officials do not want Trump to embarrass himself by weighing in for a candidate who is seriously hobbled. Earlier this year, he announced he would challenge Sen. Luther Strange in a GOP runoff, only to see him fall short against former state Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore.

White House officials declined to officially comment about Trump's view of the MS race. Drawing from her spiritual beliefs, Hyde-Smith quoted The Bible in drawing comparison to her life's plan versus God's. Trump, according to one person familiar with the conversation, did not object.
