Popovich to meet with Kawhi Leonard today to determine possible return

Spurs' Kawhi Leonard eyeing return from quad injury Thursday vs. Pelicans: report Sources: Kawhi Leonard could be available as early as Thursday against Pelicans

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Leonard is set to meet with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich on Tuesday to decide if he will be able to return to playing [VIDEO]. His lengthy bouts with injury have kept him sidelined for all but nine games this season and while the Spurs held on early, they've tumbled all the way to seventh in the West, just one game ahead of the tenth place Utah Jazz.

A source told ESPN that Leonard's target date has always been "mid-March", suggesting that his return to the court will more likely be next week, as the Spurs have home games Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

While many #San Antonio Spurs fans are excited with the anticipated return of #Kawhi Leonard on Thursday, veteran point guard #Tony Parker said they should not expect the superstar to save the team's playoff hopes.

Leonard stepped away from playing to focus on rehabbing the injured quad after a nine-game return to the Spurs that ended on January 13.

"I'm just competing", he said in a post-game interview on ABC. But, it can also be recalled that Popovich and Leonard seem to have different perspective when it comes to the latter's return. Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reports he won't play this Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans. Popovich would later say that he'd never encountered an injury like Leonard's during a career stretching back to the early 1970s. His importance to the team is beyond words, as he excels on both ends of the floor, and giving them another weapon they can use to keep the defense busy, and opening up the lanes for his teammates to attack the basket.

The Spurs begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday against Orlando. He has averaged 10.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 29.9 minutes per game this season.
