The Palestinian Authority (PA) blamed on Tuesday Hamas for a failed assassination attempt in Gaza against Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.

Since then, Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip while the Fatah Party have governed the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel.

Reuters reported that Prime Minister Hamadallah cut his visit to the rest of the strip following the inauguration of the water plant.

The Hamas interior ministry confirmed there had been an explosion and said security forces were investigating the incident.

Hamdallah, who was received by a large crowd of officials and from the public, described the attack at "a cowardly act that doesn't represent the Palestinian unity and neither the Palestinian people".

Hamdallah, who operated in the West Bank, arrived in Hamas-run Gaza to inaugurate a long-awaited sewage plant project.

Hamdallah was traveling with Palestinian intelligence chief Majid Faraj to the opening of a waste treatment facility, reports said.

The bombing that seemed to target the Western-backed leader, who is spearheading the authority's reconciliation efforts with Gaza's dominant group, Hamas, happened on the day the White House is due to hold a meeting on the humanitarian situation in the enclave. Hamdallah immediately returned to the West Bank after delivering the speech.

The PA issued a statement condemning the attack and putting the responsibility for the incident on Hamas. It also cast a shadow over al White House meeting where global donor nations were set to discuss the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. According to the deal, Hamas agreed to hand over administrative control of the Gaza Strip and start talks with Fatah in order to hold a general election in Palestine.

Hamas group, for its part, said the attack was an attempt to sabotage inter-Palestinian reconciliation efforts.

"We will hear Fatah saying that some members of Hamas do not want reconciliation, and likewise, we will hear Hamas saying this could have been a fabricated attack by Fatah's security services", Ibrahim said.

Hamas has since condemned the attack.

Hamdallah's visit comes amid a time of crisis in Gaza, where the economy is devastated.
