Package explosions in Texas kill 2

Teen killed after package explodes at Texas home 'We will leave no stone unturned,' police chief vows in deadly Texas package bombings
Charlie Simmons | 14 March, 2018, 00:34

By Tuesday, authorities had received more than 150 calls reporting suspicious packages, according to a tweet from the police department.

This map shows three reported explosions in the Austin, Texas area. The explosions Monday happened at homes just a few miles apart. A 17-year-old boy died from injuries sustained in the blast. No one else was injured in the explosion. 'Cause the next thing I knew, I saw ambulance with my neighbor on the stretcher. Manley urged visitors to "be aware of what's going on". That was about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the home where the March 2 package bomb killed 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House.

Organisers of the festival said they were heartbroken.

That woman's injuries were not life-threatening, he said.

Police have said they are not sure if the devices that detonated had all reached their intended targets.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive for the attacks, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

His death was initially investigated as suspicious but is now viewed as a homicide.

"I'm thrown off a little bit", LaMeca Davis, who lives in the neighborhood where Monday morning's first explosion happened.

That's how many people living on Oldfort Hill Drive feel after waking up to a loud noise and finding out it was an exploding package - killing one. The second call, at 11:50 am, involved a 75-year-old woman injured by a blast on her porch. "You knew that something bad was happening", Reynolds said, adding that the victim's body was riddled with holes as emergency responders took her out of the house and into an ambulance. The other two bombs killed people whose families have ties, and one of those victims' relatives said he did not know of any connections to Herrera.

The first incident occurred March 2 in a home in northern Austin.

The boxes looked mundane: The explosives came in "average-sized delivery boxes, not exceptionally large", Austin police Chief Brian Manley said.

"We're just acknowledging and we're looking at any possible motivations that would link these two cases together so that we can put this case together, understanding the victimology and who might these individuals had known and had in common", Manley said. The packages were not delivered by the postal service or delivery services like UPS or FedEx, he said.

Whether the victims were targeted: "The evidence makes us believe these incidents are related", the police chief said.

CNN reports that the two male victims are related to prominent members of the African-American community in Austin.

"We can not rule out that hate crime is at the core of this but we are not saying that's the cause as well".

With the revelation that the three package explosions are connected, Austin police are issuing a warning to people who see packages outside of their home. Manley said it's best to call 911 before manipulating any package that seems suspicious. She said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was leading the federal investigation. The agency said it was sending members of its National Response Team (NRT) to help with the investigation.

In the awake of the explosions, Texas governor's office is offering a reward of up to 15,000 USA dollars for any information that leads to the arrest or identification of those involved. Download the KVUE app on iOS and Google Play to get those alerts.
