The Turkish president's comments depict the country's increasing confidence to press its military operation against the Kurdish militants in the Afrin region to a successful conclusion after some 50 days of intense fighting.

The latest announcement comes amid reports of numerous gains made by the Turkish military and allied Free Syrian Army (FSA) forces, with the government stating that over 3,000 YPG fighters have been neutralised since the beginning of the operation.

Syria has slammed both Turkish and United States military activities on its soil as a violation of the Arab nation's sovereignty.

"We are removing the last remaining obstacles standing before our besieging of Afrin city centre".

"We thank Turkish soldiers and Turkey so much", Esra told Anadolu Agency.

Manbij, the next main YPG-held town east of Afrin, is a particular flashpoint as it has an American military presence there.

The monitor says at least 370 YPG fighters and 340 rebel fighters have died since the assault began.

The word "neutralised" is used to imply that the terrorists in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

He added that Turkey will help Afrin to rebuild and fix, including its electricity, water, education, and healthcare systems, just like it did in Jarablus, Ar-rai, Azaz and Al-Bab, after clearing these Syrian cities of Daesh terrorists during Turkey's Operation Euphrates Shield.

"Right now, Afrin city centre is surrounded".

"To date 850 square kilometers have been taken under our control".

The operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on worldwide law, UN Security Council resolutions, its self-defence rights under the UN charter and respect for Syria's territorial integrity, it said.

Erdogan said in the initial phase 2,000 square kilometres (772.2 square miles) will be taken into control.
