A gunman took at least three people hostage at a large veterans home in California on Friday and police locked down the sprawling grounds, Napa County Fire Capt. Chase Beckman said.

"Law enforcement is at the Yountsville Veteran's Home right now following reports of gunfire", they posted on Twitter.

CNBC reports that the California Highway Patrol confirmed that, on Friday, multiple shots were fired and the facility has gone on lockdown.

Jan Thornton of Vallejo, California, was among hundreds of relatives anxious how their loved ones were coping with the lockdown. Thornton said she was anxious about how her dad's coping with the stress, considering his age, PTSD and slight dementia. She said she's lived in Yountville since 1995 and is rattled about a shooting so close to home.

Ms Smith, a fundraiser for the nonprofit Pathway Home, was still inside the facility's dining hall and was not allowed to leave, he said. The home is near several popular Napa Valley wineries and restaurants and borders Vintners Golf Club, where golfers have been evacuated from the course.

Founded in 1884, it is the largest veterans' home in the United States, offering services to more than 1,000 aged or disabled veterans. He says officers are working to establish a secure perimeter around the facility and make sure others are safe.

Yountville is in Napa Valley, the heart of Northern California's wine country.

Local outlets, citing police radio chatter, reported that the gunman is armed with an automatic weapon.

CHP is also responding with aerial resources and sending a SWAT team to assist the Napa County Sheriff's Office on scene.
