The airport is now experiencing technical issues at security and check-in desks, causing major interruptions to outbound flights.

Sydney Airport said on Friday a technical snag caused interruptions in passenger processing at two of its terminals, causing hours of delay for travellers.

Jetstar expects all their flights will be back on schedule by midday, after its morning flights were delayed by an hour on average.

"There may be some delays as a result, however guests are advised to arrive at the airport as planned for their upcoming Virgin Australia flight", it posted on Twitter.

The Courier Mail reports a passenger set off a security screen, causing a backlog of passengers now scrambling to catch their flights.

It comes as Sydney Airport was thrown into turmoil this morning when a technical issue caused major delays to flights from terminals 1 and 2, with the airport even going as far as telling passengers to avoid the airport altogether.

A spokeswoman for Qantas told Daily Mail Australia terminal 3 had not been affected, and flights were running as normal.

Virgin Australia said that "due to a technical issue" passengers were being processed at reduced capacity.

The technical failure was resolved about 6.30am, 90 minutes after passengers were initially stranded.

"The AFP is assisting Brisbane Airport security staff following a routine passenger screening matter", a statement from the Australian Federal Police said.

Meanwhile in Brisbane a passenger set off a security screen at the global terminal, causing a backlog of commuters.

At around 7:45AM Sydney Airport Tweeted that it was once again processing passengers in the affected terminals.
