White House Won't Pull Hatch On Embattled Kellyanne Conway Just Yet

Investigation Concludes Kellyanne Conway Violated Hatch Act Twice by Supporting Roy Moore on TV Shaub on Conway ethics violations: 'Enough is enough'

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway twice violated the Hatch Act by "advocating for and against candidates" past year, the Office of Special Counsel told the Trump administration Tuesday. That's a good law to the extent that it prevents federal officials from perpetuating the political leadership at the expense of taxpayers and potential challengers in the next election.

The Hatch Act prohibits government employees, such as Conway, from influencing an election through their position in the administration.

"Ms. Conway was aware of the Hatch Act's prohibitions when she chose during both interviews to repeatedly identify reasons why voters should support one candidate over another in the Alabama special election", the document reads.

Its official report states the two occasions Conway allegedly made the infractions: Once on CNN and once on "Fox & Friends".

Shaub also dismissed pushback from the White House directed at the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), which announced that Conway had violated the Hatch Act twice in her official capacity.

Kellyanne Conway is in hot water for her comments on the US Senate race in Alabama past year. On Nov. 20, "Fox & Friends" introduced Conway as a "counselor to President Trump" and she spoke about Doug Jones, who was at the time the Democratic Senate candidate from Alabama.

Conway is far from the first person in a high-profile role to violate the Hatch Act. The interviews came during a special election in the Yellowhammer State in which Democrat Doug Jones defeated controversial Republican Roy Moore. Weak on borders. He is strong on raising your taxes. He'll be a vote against tax cuts.

The Office of Special Counsel - not to be confused with the Department of Justice's special counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller - is a unique government body charged with enforcing a handful of rules, including the Hatch Act. "He is awful for property owners".

Richard Painter, who served as the White House chief ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, said it is unprecedented - at least in the last few decades - for a White House to deny the findings of the independent ethics office.

"Kellyanne Conway did not advocate for or against the election of any particular candidate", deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said in a statement.

During the December 6 CNN interview Conway said that, "the only endorsement that matters in this race is President Trump's, and when he came out questioning the ideology and the vote of Doug Jones".

Career government officials found to have violated the Hatch Act can be fired, suspended or demoted, and fined up to $1,000.

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley was reprimanded by OSC a year ago for retweeting Trump's endorsement of a SC congressional candidate from her personal account.
