California Braces For Legal Battle Over Trump's Immigration Orders

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will speak about ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’ issues at an annual conference organized by California Peace Officers’ Association according to the U.S. Department of Justice California Braces For Legal Battle Over Trump's Immigration Orders

The lawsuit targets three laws in particular: the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 450), the Inspection and Review of Facilities Housing Federal Detainees law (AB 103); and the California Values Act (SB 54).

Sessions flew to Sacramento to mark the occasion with a speech Wednesday morning to a meeting of the California Peace Officers Association, which had opposed SB 54.

Sessions was speaking to an audience full of law enforcement, and he insisted that the Justice Department would win their lawsuit against California, which is only one of the major beefs - along with its legalization of marijuana smoking - that he holds with the state.

The mayor of Oakland, California, responded to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions by repeating the "How dare you?" phrase he used after she warned of a recent federal immigration raid.

It requires a court warrant before an immigrant can be transferred from local to federal custody and bars local law enforcement officers from asking about individuals' immigration status during routine interactions.

The suit heightens tensions between California and the Trump administration, and sets up a judicial showdown over the scope and degree of state cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America".

"Immigration law is the province of the federal government".

The Supreme Court reinforced the federal government's primacy in enforcing immigration law when it blocked much of Arizona's tough 2010 immigration law on similar grounds.

Late Tuesday, California Gov.

Protesters picket a speech by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Sacramento, Calif., a day after Sessions sued California over its sanctuary laws.

"Here's my message to Mayor Schaaf: 'How dare you!'" the attorney general said.

"It's time for the American public to see this racist stunt for what it is: A perverse use of power that prioritizes politics over public safety", Gascón said in a statement. "I call upon him to apologize to the people of California for bringing the mendacity of Washington to California and trying to insert discord and division, and I might add dysfunctionality, in a state that's really working".

Sessions said Wednesday that the raid would have netted some 800 arrests if Schaaf had not issued her warning.

In a statement a year ago the association's president, Gardena Police Chief Ed Madrano, said the compromise "addresses the significant public safety concerns we raised during this debate, and it reaffirms what we have held since the beginning, which is that California law enforcement should not be used to assist in mass deportations". "Her actions support those who flout our laws and boldly validate the illegality", he said. Jerry Brown and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

"Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue by other means, with more difficulty in unsafe situations - all because of one irresponsible action", Sessions said.

Sessions is expected to speak at 8:05 a.m.at a downtown Sacramento hotel.
