Students across the United States planned the walkout to protest gun violence in the aftermath of the fatal school shooting February 14 in Parkland, Fla.

They are calling on Congress to reform gun laws to take assault rifles out of the hands of youths and mentally ill individuals.

Dounya Ramadan, a senior at Newark Charter High School and one of the student organizers of the walkouts, says the students want federal leaders to take action on gun control and school safety measures.

"We have made it clear among the administrative team that while we are not going to.encourage that kind of activism and while teachers and adults are not going to actively participate during the school day, we are also going to make it clear that we are not going to stand in the way of students having a voice and expressing their concern", he said.

Is the only objective of school "to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to take credit bearing introductory courses in two- or four-year college programs or enter the workforce", or can school also become a place where students learn how they want to treat themselves, each other, and their world?

In light of the Parkland shooting, The Baltimore Sun sat down last week with seven students at Excel Academy in West Baltimore to talk about the impact gun violence has had on their lives. Kenosha police later found no evidence the two planned to carry out the threat.

He was taken into custody at the high school around 11 a.m. CST Tuesday and charged with making terrorist threats. Winter said, referring to the Valentine's Day shooting in Florida. "No one should send their child to school only for them to come home in a body bag". Those were the 16th and 17th firearms confiscated since the school year started, school police said.

Another student feared teachers pulling out guns on students if a student angered them enough. "If he was a dues-paying member, I would certainly have a problem with how we are trying him in the public and not giving him his due process". If you're not being unsafe, then you don't have to worry about that. The rampage left 17 people dead.

"I feel like today the community was united", Sampson said. "That's how simple it is, which blows my mind". Other school districts are various of stages of planning student participation next week. "We are against arming teachers as we would like to believe our teachers are there to help us learn, not act as law enforcement", Lorta said. It was unclear why the gun was at school, and multiple students were disciplined.

Round Rock ISD thanked School Resource Officer Deputy Williby for his "invaluable assistance".

"Our students can relate to that particular age group".

The district's PTA council says it's organizing as much information as it can about the planned walkouts.

Unified spokeswoman Tanya Ruder said, should walkouts occur, classes would continue as scheduled and policies for attendance would remain in effect in accordance with state statutes.

The DOE said elementary and intermediate school students would be able to leave school grounds only if a parent or guardian signed them out of school. Meanwhile, other schools like Caesar Rodney High School in Camden were initially not allowing students to join alongside the nationwide walkout.

From his hospital room in Florida, a student wounded in the Parkland school massacre plans to sue his school district and the Broward County Sheriff's Office, his attorney said. "We want to make this as meaningful as we can for them".

Similar events were held at West High School and Begich Middle School.
