As of this story's initial publication, the rocket was slated to release GOES-S around 6:40 pm MT en route to geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the earth. The satellite will monitor weather changes in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. This is the 18th launch of a GOES since 1975; one was lost in an explosion during liftoff and all but three of the satellites already up there are retired.

The new GOES weather satellites feature a suite of sophisticated instruments that meteorologists say represent a "quantum leap" for forecasting accuracy.

The Atlas V rocket was rolled out to the launch pad yesterday to be in place for lift off scheduled for today at 2:02 p.m. our time.

"The advanced capabilities of this new satellite will provide vital data to improve forecasts for all weather hazards across the West and downstream across the remainder of the continental USA", said retired Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, Ph.D., USN Ret., Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. NOAA officials also expect all the GOES weather satellites to make the agency's geostationary weather constellation last into 2036.

NASA launched another of the world's most advanced weather satellites on Thursday, this time to safeguard the western U.S. An example of that, GOES 15 had a 4x4km resolution per pixel, while GOES S will have a 2x2km per pixel resolution. The satellite will send down the highest-resolution pictures of hurricanes.

In addition to high-resolution images of the West Coast, officials say the new GOES weather satellite will help them track severe weather such as cyclones, fog, and even wildfires, which plague the western USA every year.

NOAA manages the GOES-R Series program through an integrated NOAA/NASA office at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

A new USA satellite that offers speedy, high-resolution images of storms and may save lives by making forecasts more accurate is poised to launch from a NASA launchpad Thursday, officials said.

But its primary instrument, the Advanced Baseline Imager, or ABI, and the GOES ground systems have their roots in a company that calls the Space Coast home: Melbourne-based Harris.

Tim Marsh, acting GOES-R system program director at NOAA stated that the total cost of the four satellites, from inception to the conclusion of their mission in the 2030s, will be approximately $10 billion.
