Shortly after Greitens was booked and released on a written promise to appear Thursday afternoon, his attorney was planning to file a motion to dismiss the charges levied by the grand jury.

A few lawmakers from both parties suggested that Greitens should consider resigning, just as they did after he admitted to the affair on January 10.

Greitens is further alleged to have blackmailed the woman - a local hairdresser - by threatening to make the photo public should she divulge the existence of their affair.

That was consensual, she said in the audio, but she became aware that he took a photo when she saw a flash of light through her blindfold.

The governor of U.S. Missouri State Eric Greitens is facing increasing pressure to resign following his invasion of privacy charges in connection with an extramarital affair. St. Louis Public Radio's Rachel Lippmann reports.

Gardner's statement said the transmission of the image in such a manner is a felony under the privacy statute Greitens is accused of violating. He won an expensive primary, then defeated Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster in the general election.

Greitens' campaign for governor had access to the donor list for The Mission Continues, a veterans' charity he founded, and raised $2 million from individuals and entities that had given the charity significant contributions. However Attorney General Josh Hawley states this is a serious matter, and that there is no place for party or partnership.

Greitens claims the criminal case is politically motivated.

"If someone's even charged with that - especially a man in a position of power who could use his influence to essentially blackmail somebody - there's nothing good about that, and I can't really support somebody like that even if it's just an accusation at this point", Saab says.

"These personal attacks, while disappointing, will not distract her from her duty to serve justice and the citizens of this community".

Several lawmakers, including some Republicans, are calling on Greitens to resign.

Republican State Sen. Caleb Rowden said on Twitter that he was "disgusted to learn" that the grand jury found sufficient evidence to indict Greitens and that his immediate resignation was essential for the "sake of our state".

House Republicans, including Speaker of the House Todd Richardson, announced in a statement that they would be forming a committee to "answer the question as to whether or not the governor can lead our state while a felony case moves forward".

A House investigation could be the first step in that, but the statement didn't specifically mention impeachment. "As it is still early in the process, I am unable to state what the results of the House investigation will be".

State lawmakers enacted the first version of the invasion-of-privacy law in 1995, after a southwestern Missouri prosecutor discovered that his wife, daughter and two secretaries were among female customers secretly videotaped at a combination tanning salon and video store.

ABC 17 News asked the Missouri GOP if it can confirm that Greitens never received money from any Soros-related groups. In the last week, a former St. Louis circuit judge was added to his legal team, and Dowd Bennett hired a statehouse lobbyist who is employed by longtime GOP consultant Jeff Roe's firm.
