Apple will reportedly release upgraded sets of its AirPods wireless headphones this year.

Apple's release plans for new AirPods models have been divulged in a Bloomberg report this morning.

Apple's AirPods may get a host of interesting updates in the coming year or so, which would bring a few popular features on smartphones to the popular wireless earbuds.

Expanding the functionality to its upgraded pair of AirPods could give consumers more reason to purchase the wireless headphones. The first-generation AirPods include Apple's W1 wireless chip, and last year's Apple Watch Series 3 included a new W2 wireless chip.

Like with Amazon's Echo devices or the iPhone, a user would be able to trigger the virtual assistant simply by saying the wake word aloud - "Hey Siri", in this case. With this edition, Apple will add water resistance, a feature that remains absent in the meantime.

The charging case for Apple's AirPods may also receive an upgrade. This would eliminate the need to double tap the AirPods every time.

The 2018 model may receive a "Hey, Siri" voice command, while the 2019 model may be water resistant.

Apart from the wireless chip, the report states that Apple's upcoming second-generation AirPods will also add support for the "Hey Siri" wake command. It may not be durable enough to be fully submerged in water but the report suggests that it will be able to hold its own against splashes of water and rain.

During the company's conference call earlier this month, Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts and investors that "wearables were the second-largest contributor to revenue growth after iPhone" and that sales had increased by nearly 70 percent during the past year.
