Today (Feb. 20), the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a new outbreak of Salmonella tied to kratom. In 2016, the DEA proposed a ban on kratom but backtracked under pressure from some members of Congress and outcry from kratom advocates who said it could help treat opioid addiction. Some consumers have hailed the drug as a "natural" pain remedy, but some medical experts say it can be unsafe, even deadly. Eight of 11 sick people interviewed had consumed kratom, the announcement says, leading the CDC to believe that supplies of the supplement may have been contaminated.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday said it recalled and destroyed a large volume of kratom-containing dietary supplements made by a company in Missouri.

Public health investigators interviewed the patients, and discovered that several had recently taken kratom in pill, tea, or powder form.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb also urged manufacturers to stop selling products intended for human consumption if they contain kratom.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is looking at a strong restriction on the sales of kratom, which is now traded freely on the internet and in some stores.

He noted that his agency "is taking new steps to bring new, safe and effective FDA-approved therapies to the market for treatment of opioid use disorder".

"Kratom is a plant native to southeast Asia that is consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute", according to the CDC notice. It said the illness dates range from October 2017 to January 2018, with sufferers' ages 6 to 67 years. The data adds to the FDA's evidence supporting the safety concerns and abuse potential of kratom, Gottlieb said.

When the FDA began investigating the increase in contamination to imported spice in 2013, the agency warned that "general filth" could allow the bacteria to get into these products.

"I understand that there's a lot of interest in the possibility for kratom to be used as a potential therapy for a range of disorders".
