Flu shot linked to preventing heart attacks

This latest information comes on the heels of a study last month that says people are six times more likely to have a heart attack within a week of catching the flu.

Across the USA, the number of people testing positive for the most prevalent flu strain, Flu A, peaked weeks ago and continues to see a rapid decline.

20, eight children and one pregnant woman were reported to have died as a result of the flu in the state of Tennessee. Even still, the California Department of Public Health expects several more weeks of flu activity and the mortality rate could continue to climb because it can be days or weeks after the initial infection that complications can set in. It is not known whether any of these people had an underlying medical conditions.

They bring the total number of deaths connected to the flu this season to 18. "Hopefully, the worst is past us".

Twenty people were tested for the flu overnight Monday, according to Susan Wyatt with UTMC.

The main reason flu has been so widespread this year is because the H3N2 has been the most prevalent strain of the virus. They say it doesn't just protect an individual, it protects the larger community because it helps prevent the flu from spreading.

The viability of the flu vaccine changes each year, as per the CDC.

Flu activity is monitored with a variety of surveillance systems in New Mexico, including a network of 45 outpatient providers throughout the state that report influenza-like illnesses (fever with cough or sore throat) from October through May.
