According to eMarketer, 2.2m young people between 12 and 17 - or 71 per cent of social network users in the age bracket - will use Facebook regularly this year, down eight per cent on an earlier forecast. Facebook usage among children younger than 12 years will drop more than 9%, with declines of about 6% each among 12-17 year olds and 18-24 year olds. This is the first time eMarketer has ever predicted a year-over-year decline in usage for this age group, though it has happened before. So, where are they migrating to? eMarketer has more bad news for Facebook.

The market research company originally predicted a drop past year of roughly 3.4 percent, showing that a fizzling out for teenagers was nearly three times larger than expected.

Young people are leaving Facebook at a faster pace than predicted, according to a report by eMarketer, and more are heading to Snapchat than Instagram.

"Facebook is still adding monthly users overall, but older age groups are mainly responsible for this".

In a blog post from August 2017, eMarketer analyst Oscar Orozco suggested the main reason has to do with how the younger generation consumes media.

That's more than double the "penetration rate" Snapchat had achieved just three years ago.

"Teens want that instant gratification". "Facebook isn't just Facebook, they've got Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp". Their minds move quickly.

Commentators have speculated that the popularity among older people is because it allows them to keep up with the social lives of their kids and grandchildren.

While the number of teen users dropped considerably between 2015 and 2016, 13.57% more seniors (65+) joined the platform, from 13.3 million in 2015 to 15.1 in 2015. That's not exactly cool.

In a statement, Facebook said it would appeal, adding: "We are working hard to ensure that our guidelines are clear and easy to understand, and that the services offered by Facebook are in full accordance with the law". The lean, image-based interfaces of Instagram and Snapchat are undoubtedly better suited for palm and thumb. However, if the data is accurate, or even close to accurate, Facebook should take stock of the situation and see if it can reverse course.

The ephemeral nature of Snapchat is a big draw for teens.

The analysis comes on the same day that Wired published a major investigation into Facebook, which details a tumultuous two years at the social media giant. It is often the first taste of social media for the older populace.
