Intel drones stole the show at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

As stated by Natalie Cheung, Intel's general manager of drone light shows, "In order to create a real and lifelike version of the snowboarder with more than 1,200 drones, our animation team used a photo of a real snowboarder in action to get the flawless outline and shape in the sky".

And because the drones rely on lithium-ion batteries that don't always do well in the bitter cold during PyeongChang winters, Intel intc tested the drones in Finland to evaluate their performance under similar conditions.

The Winter Olympics 2018, taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, kicked off with a pre-recorded dramatic spectacle of 1,218 drones forming the Olympic rings during the opening ceremony.

The company says its launch of 1,280 drones for the pre-recording broke a Guinness World record for "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.".

The drones are lightweight and are the only ones of their kind, built specifically for outdoor light shows, according to Intel. The drones themselves were just a foot long and weighed eight ounces, but thanks to Intel's Shooting Star service, which controls the drones in unison, more than a thousand can take to the sky to create visual experiences.

"We are honoured to have Intel drones playing several roles at the Olympic Games", said Anil Nanduri, vice president and general manager, Intel Drone Group. They'll pop up throughout the Winter Olympics during medal ceremonies. Previously held by Intel's high water mark of 500 drones flying together in 2016, the 1,218 drone flight will be a historic one.

Each drone weighs about as much as a volleyball and is fitted with LEDs that can beam any shape with 4 billion color combinations.

Looks like it's gold for Team Drone. "But still, I do think the drone performance itself was very impressive".
