In third and fourth place are Amazon and Huawei, respectively; both have enjoyed increased market shares in 2017.

Regardless of the numbers for individual manufacturers, worldwide shipping figures have decreased from 2016, falling from 174.9 million units shipped to 163.5 million units shipped in 2017.

However the detachable tablet market saw an increase of 10.3 per cent from the previous year to top 6.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Amazon upped its share to 9.2 percent from 6.7 percent, with shipments advancing to 5.1 million from 4.2 million.

Apple was the market leader in this category, IDC said, maintaining a solid lead in the holiday quarter and driving growth both through its lower-priced 9.7in iPad as well as its newly refreshed iPad Pro products. As a result of taking focus off of the larger consumer market, Windows market share fell by three percentage points to 13% year-on-year. Amazon is able to generate revenue through its Fire tablet sales while Samsung is also able to sell a decent number of units.

IDC Devices and Displays senior research analyst Lauren Guenveur says after a concerning downturn in the last quarter of 2016 and first half of 2017, they are elated to see the detachable market maintain another quarter of growth. Meanwhile, Amazon climbed into second place with 7.7 million Kindle Fire tablets shipped, for 15.6% of the market.

Despite lackluster efforts from Huawei it still achieved a quarterly growth of 11.9% and yearly improvement of 28%. Shipments of its detachable portfolio continue to rise, however these gains are outweighed by the declines seen among its slate models. The total amount comes to 41.6 million units, which is still less than the entire tablet unit sales by Apple past year.

Unlike Samsung whose business model is to sell devices at a profit, Amazon sells tablets at cost price or less as a gateway to Amazon's services. However, the bulk of Lenovo's tablets are still comprised of slates that offer great value at low prices.
