Ronald Koeman has been appointed Holland coach on a four-and-a-half year contract.

He will be expected to help the Dutch qualify for Euro 2020 and the World Cup in Qatar two years thereafter, reviving the team's fortunes in the process.

Koeman told a press conference at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist he was "really excited and very proud" to have fulfilled what he said was "always one of my ambitions" to be the Dutch head coach.

Hiddink was sacked in 2015 and replaced by Blind, who could not secure qualification for Euro 2016 and began the ultimately unsuccessful campaign to qualify for Russian Federation before making way for Advocaat.

The Netherlands were runners-up at the 2010 World Cup and finished third in 2014 in Brazil but failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and this summer's World Cup.

"I've sometimes missed that in the Netherlands team and I think we can improve that a lot", he said.

The 54-year-old, who has been out of work since leaving Everton earlier in the season, has previously coached Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord and Southampton.

"We know we don't have the best players, but that doesn't mean that you cannot have the best team", he added.

A legend with the Netherlands national team, Koeman was capped 78 times as a player and won the European Championship in 1988.

Koeman's first game in charge will be a friendly against England in Amsterdam in March.

"We need a system to get the best out of our players and to get an advantage over our opponents".

The Dutch will then face world champions Germany and France in the new UEFA Nations League in September and October.
