Flu hospitalizations highest on record — CDC

Ga.'s flu death toll climbs to 51 Flu hospitalizations highest on record — CDC
Judith Alexander | 06 February, 2018, 15:13

The Connecticut Department of Public Health on Thursday said a total of 1,154 patients have been hospitalized with confirmed cases of flu this season.

London's public health agency is reporting five people dead in just one week.

The Eagle asked Amie Worthington, a medical investigator with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, that question and more.

There are currently 17 patients admitted with influenza right now.

"Other tips to avoid catching the flu this season include washing your hands often, avoiding direct contact with ill people and getting a flu shot, Kivela said". But the epidemic is accelerating. Georgia, along with 48 other USA states, is experiencing widespread influenza activity, with 37 flu-related deaths now reported in Georgia, including four in north Georgia - and those numbers are expected to increase since the flu season has not yet peaked. In fact, it is known to be a 50-year-old circulating disease, the "Hong Kong Flu", but this season it reached its deathly potential. In the US, said Murti, there have been fewer cases of Influenza B.

She also suggests recognizing the "bubble" - staying 3 feet away from someone with the flu.

"All of the different types of influenza are causing these deaths", said Dan Jernigan, director of the influenza division at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The proportion of Americans seeing their health care provider for influenza-like illnesses for the week ending January 13 was 6.3 percent, the highest percentage since the 2003-2004 season. Not included in that figure is Aaron Masterson, a 12-year-old Huntsville Middle School student who passed away from the flu Sunday. "That might be another reason that this flu season is bad because even most of the vaccinated people are at risk". "This year's flu has been an especially severe strain, and we are urging all area residents who have not had a flu vaccine to get one". "Despite vaccination being a third as effective compared to prior years, and taking two weeks before it is effective, the CDPH website states it is ".

Getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protection against influenza.

The flu virus has taken its toll on the population.

Indeed, in a recent viral video, a Florida nurse warned people not to go to the ER if they are healthy or don't have emergency symptoms, because of the risk of catching the flu. The CDC says the flu is not letting up and you can expect to hear about more people getting sick and going to the hospital.

The ministry also recommended citizens not go to crowded places where an outbreak occurred, and encouraged them to get flu vaccinations if possible.
