Satellite Photos Confirm Chinese Military Buildup Just Outside Doklam

The Congress' reaction comes a day after media reports cited new satellite images to say that the infrastructure build-up in Doklam - the site of a tense standoff between the two countries last summer - included a "full-fledged" military base.

Ravish Kumar, spokesperson of MEA said, "Government would once again reiterate that the status quo at the face-off site has not been altered".

Last year, Beijing's decision to deploy troops to accompany workers seeking to extend a road into the Doklam region sparked a almost 70-day standoff between the two countries. "Any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate and mischievous". "I think the bonhomie (between India and China) has returned to what was prior to Doklam, so I don't visualize a very serious trouble, but then one has to be prepared for it always", said the Indian army chief.

The fact that China is establishing a military garrison at Doklam in Bhutan, where Indian and Chinese troops were involved in a face-off for 73 days past year, means that the PLA is forward deploying.

The Doklam Plateau went from a remote, virtually-uninhabited mountain range along the disputed border of China and Bhutan to one of the most important geopolitical sites in the world overnight, when on June 16 PLA soldiers and construction workers arrived to build a road through the plateau.

The Congress on Thursday slammed the Modi government for compromising national security and strategic interests by sleeping over the high intensity Chinese military build-up at the Doklam plateau.

An article by Col (retd) Vinayak Bhat on Thursday cited satellite images to show that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had set up concrete posts, seven helipads, new trenches and several dozen armoured vehicles close to the point where Indian and Chinese troops were at loggerheads for more than 70 days previous year.

The two countries agreed to end the standoff at Doklam after over 2 months of military tension between them.

News reports on Wednesday had said there was significant construction activity seen on satellite maps in the region. "They have carried out some infrastructure development, which is mostly temporary in nature", General Rawat said during a Facebook interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue in response to a question on Doklam.

It was made only two days after the Indian army chief Bipin Rawat told a press conference on Friday that China was exerting pressure on India along the border, but claimed that the Indian Army was fully capable of dealing with any security challenges on the northern frontier.
