RJD chief Lalu Prasad was on Saturday sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and fined Rs 10 lakh by a special CBI court in a fodder scam case relating to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury 21 years ago.
The fodder scam involved the embezzlement of more than Rs. 970 crore in government funds in the 1990s during Lalu Yadav's term as the Chief Minister of undivided Bihar from 1990 to 1997.
Earlier, during a press conference Lalu's wife Rabari Devi said that they had full faith in judiciary and they would accept the verdict, whatever it may be. The Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief. Lalu could have got bail if he is sentenced to less than three years in prison. After spending two months in jail, Supreme Court granted bail to Prasad in the first fodder scam case.
The presiding judge said, "An open jail is best for these people (convicts), as they also have experience of cow farming'".
Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).
